Racking System

Racking systems are essential warehouse storage solutions designed to store pallets, cartons, and materials efficiently by utilizing vertical space. These systems help organize inventory, improve accessibility, and maximize storage capacity while ensuring safe handling of goods.

Modern warehouse racking allows businesses to store products in multiple levels, making it easier for forklifts and material handling equipment to access and move goods quickly and safely. Proper racking systems also help improve workflow, inventory control, and overall warehouse productivity.

Benefits :

  • Maximize storage space
  • Better inventory organization
  • Easy accessibility
  • Improved safety
  • Operational efficiency

Types of  Racking :

  • Selective pallet racking
  • Push back racking
  • Cantilever racking
  • Mobile racking

1. Selective Pallet Racking

Selective pallet racking is the most common warehouse racking system used to store palletized goods. It allows direct access to every pallet, making it ideal for warehouses with a large variety of products (SKU).

In this system, pallets are stored on horizontal beams supported by vertical frames. Forklifts place and retrieve pallets from the rack through aisles between the racks.

How It Works:

  1. Pallets are placed on horizontal beams.

  2. The beams are supported by upright frames.

  3. Forklifts move through aisles to place or retrieve pallets.

Features & Benefits:

  • Direct Pallet Access – Each pallet can be accessed individually without moving other pallets.

  • Compatible with Forklifts – Works with standard forklifts for easy loading and unloading.

  • Expandable System – Additional racks can be added as storage requirements grow.

  • Improved Warehouse Organization – Products are stored systematically for easy identification and retrieval.

  • Efficient Inventory Management – Supports FIFO (First in First out) inventory control.

  • Better Space Utilization – Uses vertical warehouse space effectively.

2. Push Back Racking Systems

Push Back Racking System is a high-density storage solution designed to store pallets multiple positions deep on inclined rails. As pallets are loaded, they push existing pallets backward, and when a pallet is removed, the remaining pallets move forward automatically.

How It Works:

  1. A forklift places a pallet on the front position of the rack.
  2. When another pallet is loaded, it pushes the first pallet backward on a wheeled cart or roller.
  3. Pallets are stored deep inside the rack lane.
  4. When a pallet is removed, the remaining pallets roll forward automatically.

Features & Benefits:

  • High-Density Storage – Allows pallets to be stored 2–6 pallets deep in each lane.

  • Gravity-Based System – Uses inclined rails and wheeled carts so pallets move forward automatically when one is removed.

  • Single Aisle Access – Loading and unloading are done from the same aisle.

  • Multiple SKU Storage – Each lane can store a different product type.

  • Faster Loading and Unloading – Pallets automatically move forward, improving operational efficiency.

  • Improves Productivity – Forklift travel distance is reduced.

  • Better Inventory Control – Suitable for LIFO (Last In, First Out) inventory systems.

This solution is ideal for manufacturers, distribution hubs, and third-party logistics providers looking to scale output and minimize handling costs.

3. Cantilever Beam Racking

Cantilever Racking Systems are specially designed for storing long, bulky, or irregular items such as pipes, timber, and steel bars. With an open-front structure and adjustable arms, this system allows easy loading and efficient storage of oversized materials in warehouses and industrial facilities.

How It Works:
        1. Material Placement

Long items such as pipes, steel bars, or timber are lifted using a forklift or manually.

       2. Loading on Cantilever Arms

The materials are placed horizontally on the cantilever arms attached to the vertical columns.

       3. Weight Distribution

The arms transfer the load to the vertical columns, which are fixed to a strong base for stability.

       4. Storage in Levels

                                         – Multiple arm levels allow materials to be stored in several vertical tiers, maximizing warehouse space.

       5. Easy Retrieval

When needed, the forklift removes the material directly from the arms without obstruction.

Features & Benefits:

  • Open Front Design – No front columns, allowing easy loading and unloading.

  • Single or Double-Sided Storage – Can store materials on one side or both sides of the rack.

  • Ideal for Long and Bulky Items – Perfect for materials that are difficult to store on pallet racks.

  • Easy Material Handling – Forklifts can easily load and retrieve items.

  • Flexible Storage System – Adjustable arms allow storage of different product lengths.

  • Improves Warehouse Organization – Keeps long materials properly arranged and easy to access.

4. Mobile Racking

Mobile Racking Systems are high-density storage solutions where racks are mounted on movable bases that slide on floor rails. By eliminating unnecessary aisles, this system maximizes warehouse storage capacity while providing easy access to stored pallets when required.

How It Works:

  1. Racks are installed on mobile bases that run on rails fixed to the warehouse floor.
  2. The system is operated manually or by electric motor control.
  3. When an operator needs access, the racks move apart to create an aisle.
  4. The forklift or worker can then enter the aisle to load or retrieve pallets.
  5. After use, the racks close again to save space.

Features & Benefits:

  • Movable rack system on floor rails

  • Manual or electrically operated

  • Only one working aisle required

  • Up to 80–90% space utilization compared to conventional racking.

  • Reduces unused aisle space

  • Secure storage system
